Exchange Foreign Licence

Find out if you can exchange your foreign driving licence for a UK one — and exactly how to do it.

Can I Exchange My Foreign Licence?

Whether you can exchange a foreign licence for a full UK licence depends on which country issued it. Licences from some countries can be exchanged directly (called a "like for like" exchange), while licences from other countries require you to take UK tests.

Countries With Direct Exchange

You can exchange a full licence (no tests needed) if it was issued by:

All EU / EEA countries
Australia
Canada (some provinces)
Japan
New Zealand
Singapore
South Korea
South Africa
Zimbabwe

How to Apply for the Exchange

  1. Complete form D1 (available from Post Offices)
  2. Include your foreign licence (it will be cancelled and returned)
  3. Include a passport photo and proof of address
  4. Pay the £43 fee (by post) or £34 online
  5. Send to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BN
Note:

You can drive in the UK on your valid foreign licence for up to 12 months from when you become a UK resident. After 12 months you must exchange or apply for a UK licence.
